Nigeria Visa for British Passport Holders: e-visa, or a Nigerian passport instead
Nigerian Docs UK helps British passport holders prepare a Nigeria e-visa application that they submit themselves on the official NIS portal, and helps British-Nigerian families decide when a Nigerian passport is the better answer. Nigeria abolished visa on arrival on 1 May 2025; British citizens now apply for an e-visa online before travel, paid in US dollars on the NIS portal. NIS says e-visas are approved within 48 hours, but busy seasons or incomplete documents can delay approval, and advises applying at least 2 to 4 weeks before travel. Someone born abroad with at least one Nigerian parent is a Nigerian citizen by birth, can hold a Nigerian passport, and does not need a visa when travelling on it.

What it costs

The e-visa fee is set by the Nigeria Immigration Service and paid in US dollars on the official portal; it depends on the visa class and your nationality, and the portal shows the amount before you pay. We confirm the current figure for your case when you message us. Our coordination fee is quoted at the same time.

How it works
- 1. Message us with your reference code, your travel dates and who is travelling. We tell you whether an e-visa or a Nigerian passport is the right route for each person.
- 2. We agree the fee and confirm the price to you.
- 3. You pay our fee, and we check your documents against NIS's published requirements for your visa class. You then apply and pay on the official NIS portal, evisa.immigration.gov.ng, yourself. NIS warns the public not to use agents who claim to process e-visas, and we do not submit applications for you.
- 4. NIS emails the approval to you. We then tell you what to have ready for arrival: the approval, the passport you applied with, the online landing card and your yellow fever certificate, and the online Nigeria Health Declaration Form if you are travelling from a country with Ebola virus disease transmission.
What you must do in person: No attendance is needed for a Nigeria e-visa; it is applied for online. If we recommend a Nigerian passport for a family member instead, that route involves one in-person appointment.

Tourism e-visa (F5A)
- British passport valid for at least six months after the date you arrive
- Passport-size photograph
- Evidence of a return ticket
- Hotel reservation or host address in Nigeria
- Bank statement covering the last 180 days
- Under-18s travelling with an adult: birth certificate and parental consent letter
- A card to pay the fee in US dollars on the portal
Visiting family or friends (F6A)
- Invitation letter from your host in Nigeria accepting immigration responsibility
- Copy of your host's Nigerian passport, or their residence permit if they are not Nigerian
- British passport valid for at least six months after the date you arrive
- Passport-size photograph
- Evidence of a return ticket
- Bank statement covering the last 180 days
- Under-18s travelling with an adult: birth certificate and parental consent letter
Nigerian by birth on a British passport (F9A)
- British passport valid for at least six months
- Proof of Nigerian parentage, for example a birth certificate naming Nigerian parents or an old Nigerian passport
- Copies of your parents' passport data pages
- Return ticket
- Passport-size photograph
Child who is Nigerian by birth, travelling with a parent (F9B)
- The child's British passport, valid for at least six months
- Birth certificate showing both parents' full names
- The Nigerian parent's valid passport
- Proof of Nigerian parentage
- A valid ticket
- Passport-size photographs of the child and the accompanying parent or guardian
- An application letter from the parent or guardian
- A consent letter if a guardian is travelling with the child

What causes delays
- Applying too close to travel. NIS says busy seasons and incomplete documents can delay approval, and advises applying at least 2 to 4 weeks before you fly.
- Missing a document for your visa class, such as the 180-day bank statement, or the host's invitation letter accepting immigration responsibility for a family visit.
- Using an unofficial website. NIS says the e-visa system is only available on its portal, evisa.immigration.gov.ng.
- Expecting visa on arrival. It ended on 1 May 2025.
Common questions
Do British citizens need a visa for Nigeria?
Yes. Since 1 May 2025 visa on arrival is no longer available; British passport holders apply for a Nigeria e-visa online before travelling.
Does my baby born in the UK need a visa for Nigeria?
If the child travels on a British passport, yes: a standard e-visa, or the class for Nigerians by birth on foreign passports (F9B for children travelling with a parent). A child with a Nigerian parent can instead hold a Nigerian passport and travel on it without a visa. We compare the options for your family when you message us.
How long does the Nigeria e-visa take?

Can you submit my Nigeria e-visa application for me?
No. NIS warns the public not to use third-party websites or agents claiming to process Nigerian e-visas, and says the e-visa is only available on its official portal. You apply and pay there yourself. We check your documents first, so the application is complete when you submit it.
