How Long Nigerian Passport Renewal Takes in the UK (2026)

Is there an official processing time for Nigerian passport renewal in the UK?

Not from the High Commission. Its passport requirements and immigration pages, checked on 15 September 2026, list documents, fees and submission hours but give no processing time.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) does publish one. Its Service Level Agreement, revised in April 2026, sets 21 days after successful enrolment for a renewal or re-issue. Contactless applications get the same 21 days after enrolment, marked 'IF NLO' (which the document defines as No Local Objection).

NIS calls the agreement 'a binding social contract' with its customers. It is still a standard, not a promise about your case, and it counts from enrolment.

The five stages, and which ones you control

Renewal from the UK breaks into five stages. Only one has a published timescale.

The last stage depends on an envelope you supply. The High Commission says there is no physical collection once biometrics are taken, so the stamped, self-addressed C4 Special Delivery envelope is not optional.

What actually causes Nigerian passport delays in the UK

Some causes can be fixed before you book. Others cannot, but you can plan around them.

• Appointment capacity. NIS announced a Passport Intervention Team for the UK in August 2026 to handle pending, new and renewal applications, reported by The Guardian Nigeria as a move to ease delays. Enrolment began on 7 September. NIS says 2,296 applicants enrolled in its first six operational days.
• A Nigerian NIN (NIMC number) that does not match your passport. The High Commission requires a copy of your NIN and says it must match the details on your passport in the correct order.
• Incomplete applications. Responding to public complaints in January 2026, NIS said delays can arise from incomplete applications or technical issues on the platform (reported by Channels Television).
• Name change evidence the High Commission will not accept. It accepts name changes by marriage or divorce only, and does not accept deed poll.
• No return envelope. There is no collection after biometrics, so the passport needs your stamped, self-addressed C4 Special Delivery envelope.
• Failed Royal Mail delivery. Passports Royal Mail cannot deliver (for example because nobody was available to sign, or the address had changed) go back to the High Commission, whose website has published lists of them for collection in person. The latest linked list is dated December 2023, so contact the High Commission if yours has not arrived.
• Portal and payment problems. In September 2025, NIS acknowledged technical challenges with contactless applications and told applicants missing a payment OTP to check their spam folders.
• Stalled contactless applications. On 6 September 2026, NIS asked UK contactless applicants still waiting for passports to submit a resolution form (reported by Vanguard).
• Checks. For contactless applications, the NIS 21-day standard is marked 'IF NLO', meaning where there is No Local Objection.

How to track your Nigerian passport application

The official tracker is track.immigration.gov.ng. It asks for two things, both mandatory: your Application Number (NIS guides also call it the Application ID) and your Reference Number, both issued when you apply on the NIS portal.

For contactless applications, NIS says tracking works two weeks after submission, on the same site or in the NIS Mobile app.

NIS added a 'Produced' status in January 2026, after complaints that finished passports were sitting uncollected. The stages the tracker shows, as reported by Nigerian Tribune at the time, are:

• Paid: the application has been paid and vetted.
• Application Sent: sent to the passport office workstation.
• Application Received: the passport office has confirmed receipt.
• Ready for Enrolment: the application is at your selected office for biometrics.
• NIN Verification: your NIN has been verified.
• Production Queue: passport production is in progress.
• Produced: the passport has been produced. For courier delivery, NIS says this can mean produced but not yet delivered.
• Passport Issued: the passport has been issued or collected.

Nigeria passport tracking not working?

The tracker returns nothing without both numbers. If it rejects them, copy them again from the NIS portal rather than typing from memory, because the two are easy to swap.

A status that has not moved is not always a fault. A contactless application may show nothing for two weeks, and the 21-day NIS standard only starts at enrolment. Past both points with no change, use the steps below.

What to do if your Nigerian passport is delayed

Go through these in order. Keep your Application Number, Reference Number and the tracking number of your Special Delivery envelope to hand.

• Check the tracker. If it says Produced, the passport has been made and the question is dispatch or delivery.
• Check the returned passports list on the High Commission's immigration page, in case Royal Mail could not deliver it. The latest linked list is dated December 2023, so ask the High Commission directly as well.
• Contact the Nigeria High Commission (the Nigerian embassy in London) at hc@nigeriahc.org.uk or on 020 7839 1244.
• If it was a contactless application, look for the NIS UK resolution form posted on its X account (@nigimmigration) on 6 September 2026. NIS said submissions are reviewed after three working days.
• Escalate to NIS through the complaints channels in its Service Level Agreement: nis.servicom@nigeriaimmigration.gov.ng, or its contact centre on +234 912 190 0655, +234 912 155 6359 or +234 912 147 7092. The agreement says complaints through these channels should be resolved within three working days, or you should be told if they cannot be. For problems with the contactless app, NIS also lists support@immigration.gov.ng.
• If your application is still pending, the Special Passport Intervention Exercise is open to pending applications, by booked appointment only. The High Commission's notice lists London at 56-57 Fleet Street until 3 October 2026, Manchester at Nigeria House, 23 Platt Lane until 21 September, and Cardiff and Aberdeen from 21 to 26 September. NIS said on 11 September that Manchester runs to 3 October, and the booking form offers a Manchester extension option. Go by the date on your appointment slip, and book only through the High Commission's website.
• If you must travel to Nigeria urgently, the High Commission issues an Emergency Travel Certificate for a £120 postal order. It is for one-way travel to Nigeria, valid for 30 days from issue, and needs no appointment (9:30am to 1pm).

Reported turnarounds, with dates

On 11 September 2026, NIS said more than half of the 1,477 people enrolled in the first four days of the UK intervention already had passports produced and dispatched (reported by Channels Television).

For contactless renewals, a Premium Times opinion column on 5 July 2026 quoted UK applicants who said they received passports within days, and others within two weeks. Two months later, NIS was collecting details from UK contactless applicants who were still waiting.

Both happened in 2026, to different people. Treat any single figure as a guide, not a date to book flights around.

Planning around a travel date

Start well before you need the passport. The UK intervention was opened to passports with less than one year left before expiry, and when announcing the 2025 contactless launch, the NIS Comptroller General said Nigerians abroad can begin renewal a year before expiry.

Before you book anything, make sure your Nigerian NIN matches your passport in the correct order and your documents are complete. Those are the delays you control.
