Nigerian NIN Registration in the UK (NIMC diaspora enrolment)
Nigerian Docs UK coordinates Nigerian NIN (National Identification Number) enrolment in the UK through NIMC-licensed partners, and NIN corrections when your details do not match your passport. The High Commission requires a copy of your NIN, with details matching your passport, for passport applications. Enrolment is biometric and in person at a licensed centre, after online pre-enrolment, at fees set in NIMC's published schedule, which we confirm to you before you pay.

NIMC's fee schedule for licensed partners' offices outside Africa, approved by its governing board in December 2019, sets $50 for enrolment at 16 and over, $40 under 16, $5 to reissue a NIN slip, $10 for a modification and $35 for a date-of-birth correction. Mobile enrolment away from a partner's office costs more. Because the schedule dates from 2019, we confirm the exact amount at your centre before you pay. You can also book directly with a licensed partner listed on nimc.gov.ng, or enrol free on a trip to Nigeria if you hold a valid passport. NIMC has publicly named at least one London operator as NOT licensed; we only route you to centres we have verified.

How it works
- 1. Message us with your reference code. We confirm whether you need a new NIN, a modification, or a slip, and which licensed centre is nearest.
- 2. We agree the fee and confirm price and your enrolment slot to you.
- 3. You pay and attend the licensed centre for biometric capture. NIMC says the NIN is issued on the spot if there is no problem; if the system flags a possible match, it can take up to two weeks.
- 4. We track your NIN slip and, if this is for a passport, move straight on to the passport booking.
What you must do in person: NIN enrolment is biometric and must be done in person at a NIMC-licensed centre. NIMC licenses partners, mostly private companies, to enrol Nigerians in the UK. You complete online pre-enrolment first, then attend with the 2D barcode it generates; we direct you to a centre we have checked.
Documents you will need
New NIN, aged 16 and over
- A valid Nigerian passport or, if you do not have one, an authentication letter from the Nigeria High Commission confirming your citizenship (if your passport has expired, ask the centre before booking what it accepts)
- The 2D barcode from online pre-enrolment
- Proof of payment from the licensed partner's website
- Your details exactly as they appear on your passport (name order, date of birth)
Child under 16
- The child's original birth certificate (it is scanned at the centre)
- The NIN of a Nigerian parent, who must already have a NIN before the child is enrolled
- The 2D barcode from pre-enrolment and proof of payment
- A parent brings the child to the appointment
Modification (other than date of birth)
- Your NIN
- A letter explaining the change and the reason for it
- Supporting documents, for example a marriage certificate, birth certificate or statutory declaration of age
- The 2D barcode and proof of payment from the partner's website
Date of birth correction
- An application letter giving the reasons for the change
- Evidence of the correct date of birth certified by a notary public
- NIMC allows this change once only, and its governing board must approve it first
- NIMC's online self-service portal asks instead for a National Population Commission birth certificate or attestation

What causes delays
- Enrolling with a name order or date of birth that differs from your passport. This creates the mismatch that later blocks your passport application.
- Using an unlicensed operator. Only NIMC-licensed partners can enrol you.
- Arriving without the 2D barcode from pre-enrolment or proof of payment.
- Booking a child's enrolment before a Nigerian parent has a NIN.
Common questions
Is this the same as a UK National Insurance number?
No. This page is about the Nigerian National Identification Number issued by NIMC. A UK National Insurance number is a completely different thing issued by HMRC.
Do I need a NIN to renew my Nigerian passport?
Yes. The High Commission requires a copy of your NIN for passport applications, and the details must match your passport in the correct order.
Can I register for a NIN online from the UK?
Not fully. You complete pre-enrolment online on a licensed partner's website, but your fingerprints, photograph and signature are captured in person at the partner's centre.
How much does NIN registration cost in the UK?

My NIN details do not match my passport. What do I do?
Correct whichever record is wrong before you apply. If the NIN is wrong, you need a NIN modification, which you can request yourself through a NIMC-licensed partner, or for some changes on NIMC's online self-service portal. If the passport is wrong, NIS has a correction of data route. If you would rather not handle it, we coordinate the correction and then the passport, in that order.
