What you must do in person: You attend in person at Nigeria High Commission, 9 Northumberland Avenue, London WC2N 5BX (submissions 9:00am to 1:00pm), between 9:30am and 1pm. No appointment is needed for an ETC.
Documents you will need
Adults
- Letter to the High Commission stating why you need the Emergency Travel Certificate
- Two recent passport photographs
- Copy of your expired, lost or unavailable Nigerian passport (data page)
- Police report with the passport number, if it was lost or stolen
- An additional form of ID, for example a driving licence or a letter from your employer or college
- Copy of your guarantor's valid Nigerian passport
- Recent utility bill from your guarantor
- Flight ticket to Nigeria
- £120 UK postal order payable to Nigeria High Commission London
Children (under 18)
- Original and copy of the child's current passport, if a dual national
- Original and copy of the child's birth certificate showing the parents' details
- Copy of the data page of a parent's passport, at least one of which must be Nigerian
- Letter of consent signed by both parents
- A copy of the death certificate if the Nigerian parent has died
- Two recent passport photographs and the £120 UK postal order
We check all of this with you before anything is submitted, so you attend once.
What causes delays
- Arriving after 1pm.
- No evidence of Nigerian citizenship.
- Missing guarantor documents: a copy of the guarantor's valid Nigerian passport and their recent utility bill.
- Expecting the ETC to work like a passport. It is issued for one-way travel to Nigeria only.
Common questions
Can I travel to Nigeria from the UK with an expired passport?
The Nigeria Immigration Service has said Nigerians should not be denied entry to Nigeria on an expired Nigerian passport, but airlines can refuse boarding without a valid travel document, so check with your airline before you fly. If the airline will not accept it, renew in time or apply for an Emergency Travel Certificate (£120, no appointment needed) for one-way travel.
Is the Nigerian Emergency Travel Certificate one-way?
Yes. The High Commission issues the ETC for one-way travel to Nigeria, valid for 30 days from issue. Plan your Nigerian passport replacement separately. We do not advise on UK immigration matters, so check GOV.UK or a regulated immigration adviser about coming back to the UK.
Do dual citizens need an ETC?
If you hold a valid British passport you can travel on it with a Nigeria visa instead. We can tell you which route fits your dates.
